Hawaii has clear, straightforward licensing requirements. Here are the five steps every aspiring agent must complete to become licensed.
Take a Hawaii Real Estate Commission-approved course covering real estate principles, practices, and Hawaii-specific law. You can complete this online or in-person.
The exam is 130 questions — national real estate principles and Hawaii-specific content. You need a 70% to pass. Only 33.1% of salesperson exam attempts passed in FY2025 - a rate per attempt, not per person - so serious preparation matters.
There is no routine fingerprint or FBI check step in the Commission's salesperson process. What does exist: if you have a criminal, disciplinary or tax matter in your history, you can ask the Commission for a preliminary decision on whether it affects your licensure before you spend money on a course.
File your application with the Hawaii Real Estate Commission. Application and licence fees are set by the Commission and depend on the year you apply, so check the current schedule at cca.hawaii.gov/reb/application-registration-fees rather than budgeting from a figure quoted elsewhere. Additional fees apply for the background check and exam registration.

How do I get a real estate license in Hawaii?
Complete 60 hours of approved Hawaii pre-licensing education with a state-approved provider, pass the Hawaii licensing examination, and file your salesperson license application. Hawaii does not accept another state's license in place of this.
Does Hawaii have real estate license reciprocity with other states?
